Defined by Grace

Have you ever heard the words “you aren’t good enough”? I have, and I can honestly tell you those words had a negative impact on me for a long time. Words hurt, and words are hard to let go of.

Sometimes we may not even mean it, but it is so easy to put people in “categories” and give them certain “labels”. I can say with absolute assurance every person reading this has had at least one person say a negative word about them. It’s sad, but it’s the world we live in. Society tries to define you, people try to define you. But I’m here to tell you that you are only defined by His grace (Eph. 2:8-10).

A recurring battle throughout my lifetime has always been at the root of words. Whether that be negative words someone spoke over me, or even words I’ve spoke over myself. It’s a battle I’ve faced my fair share of. For a long time, I let those words get to me. I let the lies of the enemy and the lies people “thought” of me go deep into my mind. Until one day I stumbled across a quote, “What God knows about me is far more important than what others think about me.”. Wow. That hit me like a ton of bricks and it changed my view of myself entirely. Too many times to count I’ve had people speak negatively over me, through criticism, rumors, you name it. And that still happens, but how I handle those words has changed. I don’t let peoples lies or opinions define me because I’m defined by Gods love, and that’s all that matters. God loves me (John 3:16), God sees my heart (1 Sam. 16:7), and God knows who I am (Rom 8:27-37). And that is truly all that matters! God doesn’t see you how the world may see you. He doesn’t define you by your past mistakes (2 Cor. 5:17). God defines you as holy (Eph. 4:24). God see’s you as victorious (Rom. 8:37). God chose you (John 15:16).

As the new year has begun so have new beginnings. A new day to put aside the things that are weighing you down. A new day to give your worries to Jesus (1 Peter 5:6-7, Matt. 6:25-34). A new day to lay your fears at His feet (Phil. 4:6-7). What are you waiting for? He wants to take your burdens from you (Matt. 11:28-30). Don’t let what people say define you. Don’t let the lies of the enemy tell you who you are. You are His. You are defined by what He says about you in His word. You have a purpose. Your life matters. Trust in Him and put your life in His hands (Psalm 56:3). I promise you this, your life will be forever changed.
